福井県にある 7つの国指定伝統的工芸品 に関わる職人たちによって結成されたグループです。

拠点は、鯖江市・越前市・小浜市。
産地や分野の枠を越え、福井の伝統工芸を横断的に伝える活動を行っています。

伝統工芸の背景と歴史 – 文化が繋ぐ福井と朝鮮半島

福井県が位置する北陸地方は、
朝鮮半島との貿易の窓口として古くからの歴史を持っています。

商品や食糧、宗教文化、工芸技術などが朝鮮半島から伝わり、
日本海を通じて京都へも運ばれました。

このため、福井の工芸品は実用性と美しさを兼ね備えた生活用品として発展しました。
特に、食器、紙、刃物、家具など、日常生活に根ざした製品が多いのが特徴です。

現代の課題と工芸サムライの挑戦

近年、日本市場には安価な大量生産品があふれ、
伝統工芸品の生産額は1990年代をピークに減少しています。

こうした状況の中で、
「福井7人の工芸サムライ」は2014年から活動を開始しました。

私たちの目標は、
「伝統工芸を未来へつなぐこと」。

職人たちは、
「日常生活で必要なものは、伝統工芸の技術で作れないものはない」
という想いを胸に、新たな商品開発や表現に挑戦しています。

東京オリンピックがもたらした地方への気づき

2021年の東京オリンピックを経て、
東京への経済集中がより顕著になりました。

その一方で、私たちはあらためて
**「福井にしかない価値」**に目を向けるようになりました。

福井県は、約1500年の歴史を持つ伝統工芸が息づく、
全国でも稀有な地域です。

先人たちが残してくれた技術や知恵を守り、
次世代へ伝えていくことも、私たちの大切な役割です。

大量生産・大量消費が当たり前となった現代社会。
私たちは、あえてその流れに問いを投げかけています。

幕末のサムライが理想を掲げて行動したように、
「伝統の技術で、現代社会に挑む」
その想いを込めて、「福井7人の工芸サムライ」と名付けました。

Fukui 7 Craft Samurai

Preserving Japan’s Living Craft Traditions for the Future

Fukui 7 Craft Samurai is a collective formed by master artisans representing seven nationally designated traditional crafts of Fukui Prefecture, Japan.

These crafts include:

Echizen Lacquerware
Echizen Washi Paper
Echizen Forged Blades
Echizen Tansu Furniture
Echizen Pottery
Wakasa Lacquerware
Wakasa Agate Craft

Rooted in the cities of Sabae, Echizen, and Obama, this group brings together artisans whose techniques have been officially recognized by the Japanese government and passed down for over 1,500 years.

Who We Are

Fukui has long served as a gateway between Japan and the Asian continent.
Through historic trade routes across the Sea of Japan, techniques, materials, and cultural influences flowed from the Korean Peninsula into Fukui, and onward to Kyoto.

As a result, Fukui’s crafts evolved not as luxury objects, but as tools for everyday life—functional, beautiful, and deeply connected to living culture.
Tableware, paper, blades, furniture, and decorative arts all grew from this practical foundation.

Fukui 7 Craft Samurai was established to preserve this legacy while adapting it to the modern world.

Why “Craft Samurai”?

Like the samurai who once protected their land, these seven artisans protect the soul of Fukui’s cultural heritage.

In an age of mass production and mass consumption, we chose to stand against uniformity.
Inspired by the spirit of the samurai, we challenge contemporary society through craftsmanship—honoring tradition while shaping the future.

Our Activities

Through exhibitions, workshops, and hands-on experiences, we share the stories, skills, and philosophy behind Japan’s traditional crafts.

Since the 1990s, the production value of traditional crafts in Japan has steadily declined due to the influx of low-cost mass-produced goods.

However, Fukui 7 Craft Samurai, active since 2014, continues to develop new products and expressions rooted in traditional skills.

Our belief is simple:

Anything essential to daily life can be created through traditional craftsmanship.

Our mission is to ensure these techniques remain relevant—not as museum pieces, but as living skills that support modern life.

With the extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen, Fukui is now directly accessible from Tokyo.

This makes Fukui one of Japan’s most reachable centers of traditional craftsmanship—an ideal destination for international visitors, researchers, and media.
